When Should You Replace Your Eyeglass Lenses, and Can It Be Done the Same Day?

If your frame is still in good condition, buying a completely new pair of glasses might not be necessary. In many cases, you can keep your favourite frame and simply replace the old lenses.

At OpticOn, we can fit prescription, sunglass and specialised lenses into both new and existing frames. When the required lenses are in stock, glasses can often be completed on the same day.

When should eyeglass lenses be replaced?

There are several common reasons to replace your lenses.

Your prescription has changed

If your vision has changed, your current glasses might no longer provide sufficiently clear vision. Possible signs include blurred vision, eye fatigue, headaches or difficulty seeing clearly at near or far distances.

A new prescription does not necessarily mean that you also need a new frame. If your existing frame is in good condition and suitable for the selected lenses, only the lenses can be replaced.

Your lenses are scratched or damaged

Scratched lenses can affect both the appearance of your glasses and the quality of your vision. Scratches can be particularly distracting when they are located in the central viewing area or create additional reflections in bright light.

In this situation, the old lenses can be removed and new ones fitted into the same frame.

You want a different type of lens

Your prescription might be unchanged, but your daily needs may have developed. You may want:

  • Blue Cut lenses;
  • Thinner and lighter high-index lenses;
  • Aspheric lenses;
  • Photochromic lenses;
  • Prescription tinted or sunglass lenses;
  • Progressive or bifocal lenses.

Can new lenses be fitted into an existing frame?

In most cases, yes. However, the condition of the frame must be inspected before new lenses are made.

The specialist checks:

  • The strength of the frame;
  • The condition of the rims and temples;
  • The frame material;
  • Any visible damage or deformation;
  • Whether the frame is suitable for the selected lens type.

If a frame is significantly damaged or weakened, there may be a greater risk of damage while fitting the new lenses. A final decision can therefore be made after inspecting the frame in person.

How does the lens replacement process work?

At OpticOn, the process includes several steps:

  1. We inspect the frame and determine whether new lenses can be fitted safely.
  2. We review your prescription and confirm the required vision parameters.
  3. We take precise optical measurements to position the optical centres correctly.
  4. We help you select lenses according to your prescription and daily needs.
  5. The lenses are shaped to match the frame and professionally fitted.
  6. We check the final fit and quality of the completed glasses.

Can prescription glasses be made on the same day?

If the required lens type and prescription are in stock, new glasses or replacement lenses can often be completed on the same day.

A specific prescription or lens type may occasionally be unavailable and need to be ordered. In this case, the completion time is determined individually and depends on the availability and delivery time of the selected lenses.

Before visiting the store, you can contact us to confirm whether the required lenses are currently available.

Can only one lens be replaced?

In some cases, replacing only one lens is technically possible. However, the new and existing lenses may differ in coating, colour tone, transparency or level of wear.

Each case should therefore be assessed individually. For a more consistent visual and optical result, replacing both lenses at the same time may sometimes be recommended.

What should you bring with you?

If you already have a current prescription, bring it with you together with the frame in which you want the new lenses fitted.

If you do not have a prescription or have not had your vision checked recently, a vision test is also available at OpticOn. The appropriate prescription and lens type can then be selected.

Can I choose a new frame and lenses together?

Yes. If your current frame is no longer suitable or you simply want a new design, OpticOn offers a wide selection of optical frames.

Choosing the frame and lenses together allows us to consider the prescription, lens thickness, frame size and preferred appearance.
